Nicole, a mom from Murrysville

If charter school choice wasn’t an option, my son would have been left behind.

When my son was in kindergarten, we moved into a top public school district. He was treated like a number. Fifth graders gave him a black eye on the school bus, and he dreaded going to school. Thirteen IEP meetings later, we were desperate for another option.

We found the answer in PA Cyber, one of Pennsylvania’s many public charter schools.

Cyber charter schools offer the flexibility for students to move at their own pace and for teachers to adjust teaching methods to the student. It's all about what’s best for each child.

Thanks to PA Cyber, my son went from not wanting to go to school to loving it.

Our cyber charter school provides variety and the opportunity to be exposed to different people and situations. An average week could include seeing kids at the library, attending events and engaging in activities at the school offices or a planned outing to reinforce curriculum in a real-life setting.

This option provided him the opportunity to grow and then thrive, surrounded by a team that has provided so much one-on-one interaction that he will not need an IEP by the end of the year. In fact, he was accepted into the gifted program.

As a parent, I know what my child needs, and I’m determined to protect our right to choose the school that’s best for my children.
